Description:
The Estrela Mountain Dog is one of the oldest breeds from the Iberian Peninsula, originally developed to guard livestock in the mountains of Portugal. Noble and strong, this dog is both protective and affectionate with its family. Its natural guarding instinct means early socialisation and consistent leadership are essential. The breed is independent by nature and thrives in spacious, structured environments.

Best Suited For:

  • Experienced owners familiar with guardian breeds
  • Rural or spacious homes with secure outdoor access
  • Families seeking a calm but vigilant and devoted companion

Less Suitable For:

  • First-time dog owners
  • Urban living or homes without secure boundaries
  • Environments where the dog will be frequently left alone
